♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Waltz Into a Healthy Old Age ♥ ♥ ♥ Excellent article--- Wall Street Journal 4-09

The answer to staying healthy and happy as you age may be as close as the nearest dance floor, according to a chorus of studies. Dancing offers mental, physical, and social benefits, while perhaps reducing the risk of illness and even counteracting the ravages of aging, a study at Queen’s University Belfast found. “It alleviates social isolation and quite literally helps take away the aches and pains associated with older age,” said researcher Dr. Jonathan Skinner. ♥ ♥ Scientists at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that ballroom dancing helps prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Another study found that older people who danced had better balance and gait than non-dancers. In the dementia study, volunteers were studied over a 20-year period. They answered questions on how often they engaged in six hobbies that stimulate the brain, including reading, writing, and doing puzzles. They also detailed how often they participated in 11 physical activities, including bicycling, swimming, team sports, and ballroom dance. Those who took part in brain-stimulating activities lowered their risk of dementia as much as 47 percent. But the researchers found no reduction in rates of dementia for physical activities — except for ballroom dancing, which lowered the risk by an amazing 76 percent. ♥ ♥ ♥ “Dancing is a complex activity,” said Dr. Joe Verghese of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York City. There’s an intellectual aspect to dancing. When you dance, you have to remember the steps and how to dance them, you have to move in time with the music and you have to adapt to the actions of your partner. All are mentally demanding.”

4-20-9

16. From Cindy Pierce....Hi Steve,

Here's a little bit about Billy and me: Billy's been dancing since he was 8, he's a 4th generation dancer. He loves to read. He will be traveling to Washington DC, New York, NY, Boston and Philadelphia next year with his 8th grade class. Although he has danced a few times with youth clubs, he doesn't like their styling and prefers to dance mostly with adults.

I've been dancing since I was 14, would have started sooner but there was only 1 club in town and that was their rule. I work as a medical financial analyst, so have to balance that with creative endeavors like sewing, crafts and cooking - and of course, dancing! Other hobbies include road trips with my kids (7 states in 5 days), crossword puzzles, interior decorating and science fiction.

For anyone who would like to increase their square dance wardrobe, I'd highly recommend eBay. The crystal petticoats I have retail new for over $125 but I never pay more than $25.-♥♥-A valuable club member. 4-20-9

17. Lue and Bob Hintz were high school sweethearts, and they were in a tornado during their honeymoon in Missouri. They enjoy traveling and they have traveled to all 48 states-twice. They are volunteer ushers for local live theater. They moved to California from Wisconsin 36 years ago. ♥♥ We sure enjoy having them in our club. We know who to talk with if we have questions about traveling to different states, or attending Live Theater. 5-4-9

18. Irvin Harris is a graduate of the Univ. of Nebraska. Irvin is a veteran of WW2, Vietnam, and the Korean conflict. ♥♥ Irv is an active dancer of our club. 5-4-9

19. Bob and Judi Duff, both native San Diegans, met at a round dance
class, courted, and married on Valentines Day. Whoever said there
isn’t value in dance. They love square & round dancing, bicycling,
kayaking, gardening, their 13 grandchildren and singing in their
church choir together. Bob is addicted to his Mac computer and
Blackberry. He also spends time on the school board and as a city
commissioner. Judi perfects her watercolor techniques at LM Sr.
Center classes. ♥♥ They are sure fun to talk with..5-4-9

after 25 years as a church musician, playing the pipe organ, piano, and
directing choirs of all ages in the Episcopal Church. For the last 25
years she has been a certified holistic healer concentrating on diet and

travel, sing in choir, dance, exercise enjoy our family. Bob grew up in
Los Angeles, his parents immigrants from Sicily. Lois grew up in
Detroit, Mi. and graduated from Hoover High in San Diego and Bob and
